Papa in the Garden, 2021, 2.5 x 4.5 FT, hand hooked wool on linen

Intertwining the violence of death with the tenderness of memory, “Papa, Buried in our Garden” (2021) is a personal narrative of companionship and loss expressed through iconographies of friendship and mourning. The simple flying geese quilt pattern, an homage to Mennonite heritage and a symbol of safe haven in juxtaposition to the nightmarish imagery of the ravaged white swan. Papa, beloved visitor to their pond, killed in the jaws of a mink. His body entwined in rosemary, surrounded by ivy and forget-me-nots, traditional symbols of affection and remembrance.

Words, now, so rarely used that they cease to exist as entries in the Oxford Junior Dictionary. Each of my patterns is a celebration and lamentation of these lost words; bluebells, barn owls, acorns, hares and more combined with darker images of bloodshed and tears as a comment on the beauty and tragic loss of the connection between childhood and the natural world.

“Backward from the Earth” (2022)

Wool on Linen Substrate

25.5 x 44”

A night around the fire with Mercury in retrograde, the cabbage white moths and black swan drawn out of the darkness toward the flame in a flutter of wings and a tempest of energy. From the shadows of shared memory, “Backward from the Earth” (2022) captures the surreal and frenzied moment the black swan enters the flame, only to re-emerge unscathed.
